Telemetry Streams, Units, and Time

Templates can use the following telemetry streams derived from your GoPro video files. The exact list in Studio depends on the telemetry recorded in the selected source file. A stream's default unit is the unit Shred Scopes uses before you select a conversion; choosing "none" keeps that unit. Stream-specific controls are listed only where selecting that stream exposes behavior beyond its unit conversions.

GPS and position streams

Speed 2D (ground)

Measures movement across the Earth's surface without including vertical movement. Use it when you want ground speed or pace.

  • Default unit: meters per second (m/s).
  • Available conversions: miles per hour (mph), kilometers per hour (km/h), knots, minutes per kilometer (min/km), minutes per mile (min/mi), and feet per minute (ft/min).

Speed 3D

Measures total movement through three-dimensional space, including both ground movement and vertical movement. It can be higher than Speed 2D while climbing, descending, or moving through the air.

  • Default unit: meters per second (m/s).
  • Available conversions: miles per hour (mph), kilometers per hour (km/h), knots, minutes per kilometer (min/km), minutes per mile (min/mi), and feet per minute (ft/min).

Acceleration (GPS 3D path)

Measures how quickly Speed 3D changes, with Speed 2D used when 3D speed is unavailable. Positive values indicate acceleration, and negative values indicate slowing or braking.

  • Default unit: meters per second squared (m/s²).
  • Available conversion: feet per second squared (ft/s²).

Altitude

Measures the camera's elevation using the altitude values recorded by the GoPro GPS system.

  • Default unit: meters (m).
  • Available conversions: feet (ft), yards (yd), miles (mi), and kilometers (km).

Vertical speed

Measures the rate of altitude change. Positive values indicate climbing, and negative values indicate descending.

  • Default unit: meters per second (m/s).
  • Available conversions: miles per hour (mph), kilometers per hour (km/h), knots, minutes per kilometer (min/km), minutes per mile (min/mi), and feet per minute (ft/min). Feet per minute is usually the clearest conversion for vertical movement.

Distance traveled

Measures cumulative distance along the valid GPS positions in the source file.

  • Default unit: meters (m).
  • Available conversions: feet (ft), yards (yd), miles (mi), and kilometers (km).

GPS course

Measures the direction of travel rather than the direction the camera is pointing. A value of 0° is north, and the value increases clockwise.

  • Default unit: degrees (deg).
  • Available conversions: none.

Grade (slope)

Compares vertical speed with ground speed. Positive values indicate an uphill grade, and negative values indicate a downhill grade.

  • Default unit: percent (%).
  • Available conversions: signed degrees or absolute steepness in degrees. Absolute steepness removes the uphill or downhill sign.
  • Additional controls: Grade exposes three input controls that are removed when you choose another stream.
    • Smoothing: accepts 0 through 100 and starts at 60 when Grade is selected. A value of 0 uses the unsmoothed grade values. Higher values use a wider centered sampling window, which suppresses brief GPS spikes and produces a steadier display without adding playback delay. Very high values can also soften or hide short, genuine changes in slope.
    • Adaptive Smoothing: starts on. It varies the smoothing window using the reliability of the surrounding motion and GPS data, applying more stabilization around spikes, low-speed movement, rapid heading changes, or uncertain samples while preserving more detail in reliable sections. Turn it off when you want the selected Smoothing amount applied uniformly.
    • Low Motion Hold: starts off and applies while Adaptive Smoothing is on. It holds grade nearer to a reliable surrounding value when the camera is barely moving, which prevents an idle grade display from wandering. Turn it on for a steadier stopped or near-stopped readout; leave it off when small low-speed grade changes must remain visible.

Latitude

Identifies the north-south component of each recorded GPS position.

  • Default unit: decimal degrees (deg).
  • Available conversions: none.

Longitude

Identifies the east-west component of each recorded GPS position.

  • Default unit: decimal degrees (deg).
  • Available conversions: none.

GPS path

Combines latitude and longitude into an ordered route that compatible map and path graphics can draw.

  • Default unit: latitude and longitude coordinate pairs.
  • Available conversions: none.

GPS time

Contains the absolute UTC timestamp recorded with the GPS telemetry. Use it for clock displays or time alignment instead of elapsed-duration displays.

  • Default unit: UTC milliseconds.
  • Available conversions: none. Date and time formatting controls determine how the timestamp is displayed.
  • Additional controls: GPS Time text can display a complete date and time, include milliseconds or a time-zone label, show time or date alone, or show the Unix timestamp in milliseconds. It also provides 12-hour versus 24-hour time and UTC, local, or custom IANA time-zone selection. Changing the time zone changes the displayed clock value, not the recorded UTC timestamp.

Lateral G (GPS path)

Estimates side load from ground speed and changes in GPS course. Positive and negative values distinguish the two turn directions.

  • Default unit: g.
  • Available conversions: none.

Longitudinal G (GPS path)

Estimates forward or backward load from changes in ground speed. Positive values indicate acceleration, and negative values indicate slowing or braking.

  • Default unit: g.
  • Available conversions: none.

Motion and time streams

Accel X (camera), Accel Y (camera), and Accel Z (camera)

Are three separate streams containing acceleration along the camera's own X, Y, and Z axes. They are camera-frame values, so their relationship to rider or vehicle direction changes with the camera's mounting orientation.

  • Default unit: g for each axis.
  • Available conversions: none.

G-force

Measures the magnitude of the camera's acceleration across all three axes. It is approximately 1 g while stationary, approaches 0 g during freefall, and can rise during impacts or landings.

  • Default unit: g.
  • Available conversions: none.

Rotation rate

Measures the total magnitude of gyroscope movement. It represents spin or flip intensity, but it does not identify a specific rotation axis or direction.

  • Default unit: degrees per second (deg/s).
  • Available conversions: none.

In air

Identifies frames that fall inside a detected airtime event. A value of 1 means in air, and a value of 0 means not in air.

  • Default unit: binary 0 or 1.
  • Available conversions: none.

Cumulative airtime

Totals the duration of detected airtime events from the beginning of the session or rebuilt range through the current frame.

  • Default unit: seconds (s).
  • Available conversions: none. Duration formatting controls can display the value as elapsed time.
  • Additional control: Data text can display this seconds value as raw output or use MM:SS, HH:mm:ss, hundredths, milliseconds, or a single decimal of seconds.

Elapsed time

Measures progress from the beginning of the active session. Rebuilding data graphics from a selected range resets its starting point to 0.

  • Default unit: seconds (s).
  • Available conversions: none. Duration formatting controls determine how the value is displayed.
  • Additional control: Data text can display elapsed seconds as raw output or use MM:SS, HH:mm:ss, hundredths, milliseconds, or a single decimal of seconds.

Derived stream variants

Shred Scopes can create additional streams when their source stream is available:

Running maximum

Retains the highest value reached so far. It is available for Speed 2D, Speed 3D, Altitude, GPS path acceleration, G-force, Lateral G, and Longitudinal G.

  • Default unit: the same as the source stream.
  • Available conversions: the same as the source stream.

Running minimum

Retains the lowest value reached so far for the same supported streams.

  • Default unit: the same as the source stream.
  • Available conversions: the same as the source stream.

Rate

Measures how quickly a supported source stream changes per second.

  • Default unit: the source unit per second. For example, a Speed 3D rate uses m/s per second, while an Altitude rate uses m/s.
  • Available conversions: conversions are offered only when the resulting rate unit matches a supported source unit. Altitude rate uses m/s and provides the m/s conversions listed above; most other rate variants have no additional conversion.

Cumulative altitude gain and Cumulative altitude loss

Totals only positive altitude changes, while Cumulative altitude loss totals the magnitude of negative altitude changes.

  • Default unit: meters (m).
  • Available conversions: feet (ft), yards (yd), miles (mi), and kilometers (km).

Range behavior

"Map / normalize input" changes how a numeric stream is fitted to the values a layer expects:

  • "fit data min/max" maps the lowest and highest values in the active data to the configured output range.
  • "fit max absolute" creates a range centered on 0 using the largest positive or negative magnitude.
  • "fixed range" maps a specific input minimum and maximum to a specific output minimum and maximum.

Choosing "Rebuild data graphics from range" recalculates range-relative streams for the selected range. It also resets cumulative streams such as Distance Traveled, Cumulative Airtime, Cumulative Altitude Gain, Cumulative Altitude Loss, and Elapsed Time to begin at 0 for that range.

Clamp values

Use "Clamp values" under "Input advanced" to prevent a numeric stream from going below "Clamp min" or above "Clamp max". A value below the minimum becomes the minimum, and a value above the maximum becomes the maximum. This is useful for limiting GPS spikes, keeping a gauge within its intended operating range, or preventing an unusual sample from dominating later range mapping.

Unit conversion happens before clamping. If you convert speed to mph and set the clamp range to 0–60, the clamp values represent mph, not m/s. Clamping affects only that layer input and does not change the extracted telemetry or other layers that use the same stream.

"Clamp values" limits the incoming telemetry before mapping. The separate "Clamp mapped output" option limits the result produced by a fixed-range map.

Deadband

Use "Deadband" under "Input advanced" to hold values near a chosen center at that exact center. "Deadband width" sets the total width of the window, and "Deadband center" sets its midpoint. For example, a width of 0.10 centered on 0 changes values from −0.05 through 0.05 to exactly 0.

Deadband is useful when small sensor changes make an indicator jitter around rest, level, or another neutral value. Values outside the deadband remain unchanged. It is different from smoothing: deadband snaps values inside a defined window to one value, while smoothing averages changes over time.

Deadband uses the selected converted unit and is applied after clamping but before range mapping. These input controls apply to numeric streams; they do not alter GPS Path or GPS Time.
